First Presbyterian Church of Dallas Welcomes Rev. Dr. Gareth Icenogle as Interim Pastor

About Rev. Dr. Icenogle

The Rev. Dr. Gareth Icenogle (pronounced EYE-snōggle) is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He is married to Vida Smith (for 45 years) who is retired from the world of marketing, institutional investments, banking and consulting. Vida was Vice President for Institutional Investment Marketing and Sales at Republic Bank of Dallas in the mid-1980s. They have two grown daughters. Tamara is a buyer for Oakley living and working in Milan, Italy. Tonya, who lives with her husband Evan and daughter Amelia in SoCal is a biomedical engineer.

Gareth grew up in Chatsworth, California, is a product of the LA City Schools, and a graduate of Chatsworth High School (1966). He is also a graduate of UC Riverside, with graduate degrees from Cal State LA and Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

He has served Presbyterian congregations as Interim Pastor in Sherman Oaks, California, and La Canada, California. He has also served as Associate Pastor at Highland Park in Dallas, Texas, and as Co-Pastor and Pastor in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and Ridgewood, New Jersey. Most recently he returned to serve his home congregation in La Canada Flintridge, California, where he was ordained in 1982. He also served Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program. He has also been an Adjunct Professor in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship at Fuller for 32 years.

Before being ordained in the PC (USA), Gareth served Baptist, Church of Christ, and interdenominational congregations in SoCal as a church musician, youth minister, and assistant pastor.

In 1980, Gareth invested six months with the Presbytery of San Fernando to survey areas of the presbytery for potential new church development as a New Church Development Consultant.

Since 1985, Gareth has also consulted for congregations, presbyteries, parachurches, seminaries, and nonprofit organizations on matters of small groups, leadership development, conflict resolution, strategic planning, organizational development, and church growth.

Gareth and his wife have degrees in music and met through their mutual musical connections before entering the pastoral and business worlds. Gareth is the author of the book "Biblical Foundations for Small Group Ministry”, which has had international influence in church ministry for 23 years. Gareth’s primary gifts in ministry are preaching, teaching, writing, leadership, team building, moderating, pastoring, strategic planning, listening, conflict resolution and contextualizing.
